Philippians 4:6

About St. Patrick:

St. Patrick was born to Roman Christian parents in 387, in what is now part of Scotland. When he was a teenager, he was captured by Irish pirates and shipped to Ireland to work as a slave tending sheep.

At the time, Druids and pagans lived in Ireland.  It was during this captivity that St. Patrick’s spirituality deepened because in his hardships he turned to prayer. Some years after his capture God, instructed him in a dream to board a ship to escape.  He went to the shore and found a ship whose crew was willing to take him to Britain.

He spent four years studying for the priesthood and was subsequently ordained.  He was later ordained as a bishop and tasked with spreading Christianity in Ireland. He persevered in his ministry, built churches all around the country and was able to convert all of Ireland to Christianity. He is associated with the shamrock, which he used to explain the Holy Trinity.

He died between 461 and 464 and is believed to have been buried at Down Cathedral in Downpatrick, Ireland.  His feast day is celebrated on March 17.
